About Essex, Massachusetts
Essex, Massachusetts was originally part of Ipswich until its incorporation in 1819. Located on the North Shore’s peaceful Essex Bay, the town includes Crane Wildlife Refuge, a small group of islands in the bay and the Essex River, popular for kayaking. It is also home to the nearly 100 year old restaurant, Woodman’s of Essex, which claims to have invented the fried clam. Due to the relative shelter of the bay and lack of sandy beaches, Essex is relatively quiet compared to nearby towns.
Essex is a very small community of only 3,500 residents. In 2011 Boston Magazine ranked Manchester Essex public schools #6 in the state out of 135 communities. 100 Year old Conomo Point is one of Essex’s historic neighborhoods, with both seasonal cottages and year round homes.
